Congratulations Professor Brian Abbey on his appointment as a Distinguished Professor at the School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, La Trobe University.

For the past 17 years, Professor Brian Abbey, a Chief Investigator on the MOBIUS project, has led the development of new optical technologies for biological imaging and sensing, leveraging advances in coherent optics and nanotechnology. He is deeply committed to translating fundamental science into real-world innovation.

His contributions have been recognised through numerous prestigious awards, including the Victoria Prize for Science and Innovation (Physical Sciences) and the Eureka Prize for the Innovative Use of Technology, awarded for his development of the NanoMslide—a revolutionary biosensing platform that detects optical biomarkers without the need for staining.

His work has had broad impact through senior leadership and outreach roles, including serving as Director and Deputy Director of the La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science (LIMS). He is a founding member of the $10M+ Australian Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Medical Innovation (ACAMI) and co-founder of FARLabs, a virtual laboratory outreach initiative designed to connect rural schools with hands-on STEM learning experiences.
