We are delighted to welcome to our first four Postdoctoral Researchers

We are thrilled to welcome a Senior Postdoctoral Fellow and three Postdoctoral Researchers to MOBIUS. We are delighted to have them on board and look forward to the exciting contributions they will bring to MOBIUS!

Meet the team:

Dr Martin Ams

Dr Martin Ams, Senior Postdoctoral Fellow, is working with Professor Michael Withford at the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at Macquarie University.

Martin has 20 years of experience in photonics, and over a decade in translating laboratory research into industrial applications.

He has engineered optical sensors for a variety of uses including in the water, rail network, marine and nuclear industries.

“MOBIUS gives me a fantastic opportunity to work with partners, and utilise my skills to develop optical fibre sensors to monitor environmental conditions in harsh environments,” he says.

“I thoroughly enjoy connecting with new partners in the field of sensing and their use in the management of infrastructure assets in hostile environments. I am particularly motivated to see my research contribute to solving real world problems.”

Dr Samridhi Bajaj

Dr Samridhi Bajaj, who joins us as a Postdoctoral Researcher, is based at the La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science (LIMS) and the School of Agriculture, Biomedicine and Environment, La Trobe University.

Samridhi recently completed her PhD in electrochemistry, under the supervision of Professor Conor Hogan. She has diverse skills at the intersection of fundamental and applied chemistry, computation and programming, and sensor hardware.

“I am driven by purposeful science that expands the boundaries of research in ways that are both intellectually exciting, and socially meaningful and applicable,” explains Samridhi.

An avid learner, Samridhi is keen to hone and expand her skills in sensor development and commercialisation strategies.

“I am excited to be joining MOBIUS, where I will be drawing on my multidisciplinary background to translate laboratory-based technologies into practical low-cost, point-of-use sensors,” says Samridhi. “I look forward to working closely with industry partners to bring science closer to real-world impact.”

Dr Helmini Jayarathne

Dr Helmini Jayarathne joins us as a Postdoctoral Researcher. She is based at the La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science (LIMS) and the School of Agriculture, Biomedicine and Environment, La Trobe University.

Helmini recently completed her PhD in Professor Conor Hogan’s research group on the development and optimisation of sensors for commercial purposes in the food and beverages industry.

“I enjoy the process of taking a concept and turning it into a functional sensor, and knowing that it may help solve critical problems in industry and society,” says Helmini.

“My experience includes advanced electrochemical techniques, fabrication methods such as laser cutting and 3D printing, and materials design and selection,” explains Helmini. “This interdisciplinary foundation is crucial in developing low-cost and scalable sensors that detect molecules reliably and sensitively.”

Now, she is excited to join MOBIUS. “I know I will thrive in the environment that MOBIUS fosters: collaborative, problem solving, and home to diverse perspectives and skills, which are all key to making innovative breakthroughs,” she says.

Dr Robert Sikos

Dr Robert Sikos, a MOBIUS Postdoctoral Researcher, will be working with Professor Conor Hogan at the La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science (LIMS) and the School of Agriculture, Biomedicine and Environment, La Trobe University.

Robert has experience in fundamental through to applied science, in chemistry, physics, nanotechnology, machine learning, and statistical analysis.

“My diverse expertise will enable me to take a multi-disciplinary approach as I innovate and push the boundaries of next-generation sensor technologies,” he explains.

“I have a vision of bringing technology out of the laboratory, enabling important and useful measurements to be made wherever and whenever needed—and I can help make that happen at MOBIUS,” says Robert.

“I am excited to start a new chapter in my career as a MOBIUS Postdoctoral Researcher at La Trobe University. I am particularly looking forward to working with MOBIUS’ community of experts in all aspects of point-of-use biosensing.”
