Research

MOBIUS brings together experts in advanced manufacturing, biology, chemistry, physics, nanotechnology and materials science, engineering, business, commercialisation, and entrepreneurship.

Together, we are creating next-generation biosensing platforms through three interconnected themes: Materials, molecules, and biomarkers; Biosensor manufacturing; and Detection science and hardware.

Materials, molecules and biomarkers

Enhancing technical capabilities using innovative materials and detection methods.

Biosensor manufacturing

Boosting production efficiency, and creating versatile and scalable biosensors.

Detection science and hardware

Developing new ways to detect molecules where and when needed, for diverse applications.

MOBIUS’ research spans diverse applications, including:

Agriculture

Miniaturised sensor technologies and wearables to overcome key technological barriers and unlock the full potential of nanosensing technologies in agriculture for livestock management and disease detection, and hive health monitoring. This will enhance on-farm productivity, sustainability, and efficiency.

Healthcare

A rapid and robust surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)-based optical tool to detect proteins on the surface of cells. This could lead to earlier disease diagnosis and improved patient outcomes.

Microneedle technology that could be used in a wearable device to measure hormone levels, or simultaneously detect multiple molecules, like potassium, directly in skin. These technologies could lead to more accurate and convenient management of fertility, diabetes, and other aspects of health.

Environmental monitoring

Robust optical fibre sensor systems to be deployed in a wastewater network. The data will help to extend the life of this critical infrastructure.
